How to make your house into a home

Happy Wednesday my lovelies! In today’s blogpost I am going to talk about how to make your house a home. Of course nothing does the trick as the house being filled with the people you love, but since you are not always in control of that let me give you a couple of other tips to make your house feel like a home. I will be sure to mention some tips and tricks that you can apply anywhere, included dorm rooms, apartments etc. Because nothing is better than stepping into a space and feeling cosy and right at home!

Of course style is such a personal thing, but still even then I think that there are a couple of items that can differ in style but bring the same cosy vibe to your house. For this blogpost I will of course talk from my point of view but maybe when that´s not completely your style you could always give it a little twist to make it into your style. You ready? Let’s go!

1. Determine your base

What kind of colours do you have on your walls? What does your flooring look like? It is SO important to look at the base you have before you start to decorate or even choose your furniture. For example, we have painted most of our walls in a (very) light grey, one wall is black (yes, BLACK!!) and we have dark tiles on our floor. This means that I shouldn’t choose a dark salon table / dining table for example. That would just blend in with the floor. Do you have all white walls? Then you can go a bit more ‘crazy’ with your accessory colours or your furniture. Do you have ‘crazy’ colours on your wall? Then you might want to keep it calm with the rest of your decor. It is all about balance !

2. Find out what ‘ties’ your place together.

This can really be anything. Do you have one specific colour theme running through your house? Maybe a certain fabric (velvet, fluffy) that keeps coming back in your interior or a certain material that you really like. For me, this is 100% wood. As I just said our base is more grey / darker so I needed something that would blow a bit more life into our house. I absolutely love anything made of wood so this was the perfect combination with our darker base. Our salon table, dining table and even our kitchen has a wooden-look to it and I can’t get enough of it! It really is the element that ties our place together so I try to bring it back in some accessories as well.

3. Pictures, pictures and more pictures

I love to have loads of pictures on display but I do not like a picture frame in every corner of my house. So I thought long and hard about this, but I think I found the perfect solution. I like to think that the style in our house is a bit of a combination between modern farmhouse and industrial, so I NEEDED to get one of those cute racks in my life where you can put up cards, pictures or basically anything else you like. This is on one of the walls of our kitchen right next to the door when you enter our living space and I think it is perfect. People always stop to see the new pictures I hung up and comment on how cute this looks in our kitchen.

4. Add living elements

And no, I don’t mean a cute puppy or a kitten (although, that would be a GREAT option as well). I mean plants, greenery or whatever else you can think of that gives life to a space. I have a huge plant next to your just as huge cabinet and I also like to have some kind of flowers / greenery on the table. This always gives me a fresh and ‘put-together’ feeling. Oh, and we also have the cutest cactus arrangement which also really adds to the space.

5. Get cute in the ordinary

What I mean with this is get yourself some cute towels, find a fun way to display your salt and pepper or put up a funny / inspirational quote on you letter board every now and then. This is really random, I know, but I am honestly such a happy gal when I have a new set of tea towels hanging out or I am reminding myself of my worth in Gods eyes through a 'simple' letter board when I'm making my coffee. Make sure you can still find your happiness in the small things when you are (re)decorating your house.

And that my friends are all the tips I have for you on how to make your place look cute, put together and make it feel like home. Oh and if I can give you one last tip, please don’t buy any decorative items in the your local target or hobby lobby before you’ve taken a look at a thrift store. You WILL be amazed on what people give to a thrift store as I have bought some of the coolest decor items there that would have normally cost me a ton of money. I hope you can work with some of the tips I gave here and if you’d like to see more snippets of my house you can head over to my Instagram. Always insta-storying little bits and pieces of the house.

Much love,

Marina
